January 08, 2011 What I Drank Last Night!
FRIDAY, JANUARY 7, 2011
I broke open a luscious bottle of Almaviva 2006. A product of Chile, Almaviva is a Premier Cru from Mouton Rothschild and Concha Y Toro that breaks all standards for a Bordeaux like Red. Made in a style similar to Opus One from California, also a Mouton Rothschild subsidiary, Almaviva is about a third of the price of Opus One and, unlike the latter, is ready to drink right now! This is a wine that ages wonderfully and should be a part of any serious wine collector’s cellar. It is a full bodied wine, consisting of a blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Carmenere, 7% Cabernet Franc and a touch of Merlot.
I have tasted about 6 of the 12 vintages and am always amazed at how wonderful and round this wine is. “Velvety smooth….finest blending of tropical grapes….mild oak aging—ELEGANT. (Quotes from WINES OF PASSION: THE BEST OF SOUTH AMERICA). Available at Gol! The Taste of Brazil with a special price of only $99. Robert Parker 92 for 2006, 93+ for 2007.
